Delta Air Lines Opens New Delta One Check
This concludes the second of three phases of the Delta Sky Way at LAX project.
Delta Air Lines, the Atlanta-based airline, has recently finished another major milestone in the Delta Sky Way at LAX in coordination with Los Angeles World Airports. The Delta Sky Way at LAX project includes renovating Terminal 3 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This project is a $2.3 billion investment to modernize one of the airline's most visited hub airports.
The initial project was said to be a 1.2 million square foot complex that would house 27 gates. This was the consolidation of the old terminals 2 and 3 at Los Angeles Airport. The initial phase of this project concluded in April of last year and was done 18 months ahead of schedule.
This was the start of a renovation of a new terminal 3 facility and included the new Delta Sky Club at LAX. The new premium lounge is located on the departure level between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. This 30,000-square-foot lounge is one of the largest Delta lounges.
Guests can check themselves in at the downstairs lobby kiosks before ascending the large staircase and entering the new lounge. The new club includes private phone booths, theater-style seating, a new nursing room, large family restrooms, and eight shower rooms.
In addition to the newly opened Delta Sky Club, the airline will also keep the existing Delta Sky Club in Terminal 2 open. The lounges can accommodate 800 guests when both clubs are open simultaneously.
Late last year, Delta Air Lines also announced the completion of nine new gates and various upgraded seating areas within Terminal 3. This new area opened in October 2022 and included a variety of new restaurants and retail options. These were opened in coordination with Delta's premium concessions and retail partner Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield and include Alfred Coffee, Chicken + Beer, Jamba Juice, and several others.
The second phase of the large Delta renovations was focused largely on the west headhouse. The renovated west headhouse now includes self-service kiosks to drop bags and print boarding passes. The airline is expecting to implement digital ID technology soon. This will allow customers to use their biometric data to move seamlessly through the airport. Eligible travelers will find this readily available at the end of the summer.
Also included in this phase of renovations was the addition of an exclusive Delta One check-in area. This is located at the lower levels of Terminal 3 and includes a private TSA screening lane and direct access to the Delta Sky Club. This premier check-in service includes being greeted by a team of Elite Service Agents and also includes offerings of light food and beverages.
The Vice President of Global Sales at Delta Air Lines, Scott Santoro, spoke about the phase completion, saying,
"We’re building on our position as LAX's leading premium global carrier and achieving yet another infrastructure milestone ahead of schedule – enabling an ever-elevated travel journey for our Los Angeles customers. Now that the summer travel season has officially kicked off, Delta couldn't be more ready to get our customers where they want to go most."
The last phase of the Delta Sky Way at LAX project is set to be completed in August of this year. This last phase is said to include a new addition of 100 more seats to the Delta Sky Club, the re-opening of the Terminal 3 passenger tunnel, a new Terminal 3 Help Center, and a second connection to LAX's automated people mover system that is set to open mid-next year. The final phase of the project will also eliminate the need to bus between Terminals 2 and 3.
