A former mills could be transformed into living space - as part of a planning application that is one of 51 submitted in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire this week. Leek was once home to a booming textiles industry, but the machines have since fallen silent.

Several former mill buildings remain and some have been re-purposed to provide other uses, such as housing. And an application to convert the Grade II Listed London Mill into 34 apartments has recently been submitted to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council.

The Ashbourne Road mill was built in the mid-19th century and is surrounded by residential streets. A design and access statement submitted as part of the application said Listed Building Consent was also being sought for the building's conversion.

It added: "The proposed one bedroom single person units would be set across the four storeys of the building and there would be no increase in the size and footprint of the existing. The application proposes to strip the existing building back to its original fabric, with all later internal partitions, cupboards, sanitary ware, services including sprinkler system etc removed to reveal the basic building, brick walls, timber floors including cast iron columns, timber and slate roof.

"London Mill is a prominent Grade II Listed Building which has been empty for some considerable time. The adopted Masterplan for Leek shows the site to be part of a larger area known as the Eastern Mill Quarter where positive support and encouragement is given to refurbishing and regenerating this important historic area, much of which remains intact, in a mix of uses.

"The Masterplan recognises that there are a number of mills in this area, including London Mill which are vacant, disused and deteriorating and detracting from the areas potential to act as a key and attractive gateway into the town centre from the East. London Mill is a prominent landmark building which helps to define this gateway."

Listed below are other planning applications published online by councils in Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire during the past fortnight.
