You don't need to choose between style and storage in a vanity mirror—you can have both (and more).

Whether you’re starting on a bathroom reno or looking to refresh your current space, installing a new bathroom mirror can transform the way you use the space. A functional bathroom mirror can add storage to a tiny powder room or provide better light for shaving on those bleary-eyed mornings before work—but even the most practical mirrors can be stylish.

"Most people don't think about design when it comes to choosing a bathroom mirror, but this is arguably the most important piece of decor in a bathroom," says Hillary Levy, interior designer at the New York-based company Lisa Kaye Designs. "The bathroom mirror can be both a functional piece of storage, but also your bathroom centerpiece."

We rounded up the best options at various sizes, styles, and price points so you don't have to spend any more time squinting to see yourself in the mirror. Here are our favorites.

From relative size to functionality, it's worth taking the time to sort out exactly what you want before taking the plunge on a new bathroom mirror.

According to Levy, bathroom mirrors typically hang a few inches above eye level for the tallest person in the house—like artwork. We also recommend finding a mirror that's a few inches smaller than the width of your sink for peak design, but there's nothing wrong with an oversized mirror if that's your bag. Make sure to measure above your bathroom sink before you buy, paying special attention to depth so you don't end up with a medicine cabinet that juts out into your sink space.

Although your space might dictate whether you choose a square, rectangular, or round mirror, it's also a personal aesthetic preference—like picking between a framed or a frameless mirror.

"Frames add extra details that can help fill a space, while frameless mirrors offer a clean and modern look," Levy says.

Consider whether you'll hang your mirror horizontally or vertically, too, and whether you want built-in or separate lighting. Some bathroom mirrors come with border lights and sections of the mirror that are magnified to help you see better, which comes in special handy if you regularly apply makeup, shave in the mirror, or do detailed skincare.

Medicine cabinets are bathroom mirrors that open to a small section of shelves, which are typically discrete and great for storing medication, skincare products, toothbrushes, and that expired bottle of calamine lotion we all have. As we said earlier, make sure to measure so you choose a model that doesn't stick out too much—nobody wants to bonk their head every morning when they spit out their toothpaste.

We consulted experts, like Hillary Levy, to ensure our picks were in line with what makes a great bathroom mirror from a design perspective. We also used our own experience with various types of bathroom mirrors, as well as extensive research on customer reviews to ensure each pick is high-quality and ultra-functional. We found options with cabinet shelves, LED lighting, and hanging mirrors with extra magnification, while making sure to consider price and ease of installation.

The Weeksville is an elegant framed mirror. It's available in multiple sizes—20-by-30 inches, 24-by-36 inches, and 30-by-40 inches—and can be oriented horizontally or vertically.

The steel frame is available in white, silver, black, nickel, and gold, and its backing is constructed with solid silver that'll hold up well to a bathroom with high humidity.

Mirrors can also act as accent pieces, like this Pottery Barn framed arch mirror. The sleek design has an MDF backing (manufactured wood) for strength, durability, and to protect against trapped humidity. A vertical security cleant mount will keep it anchored safely and securely to the wall.

The Lithonia Beveled vanity mirror is available in eight sizes and hangs flush against a wall with a simple hook that's easy to install. Levy recommends this one because it makes "any bathroom look larger than it is."

Made in Michigan, this mirror is designed with ¼-inch thick glass to provide a clear and sharp reflection.

This border-lighted mirror from All Modern is a dream for anyone who has trouble seeing in the bathroom. With an ultra-bright LED light that can dim for early mornings and late nights, this mirror is easy to use and simple to mount. It does hang off the wall a bit, so make sure you have the room for this one before you buy.

The Aldora is a sleek, beautiful mirror that adds a glow of diffused light to your bathroom to upgrade the space. It's a great choice if you are looking to add more light to your bathroom or if you need bright light to help you see yourself in the mirror.

However, keep in mind that you’ll need to hardwire this mirror directly to electrical wires (which is actually a bonus, because it means your light switch will turn on the mirror lights). Although it's not dimmable, reviewers report it isn't too bright.

For a guest bathroom that doesn't require much storage, the Vanity Mirror from Vasuhome is an excellent pick. It has a chic, matte black finish and a shelf with ample storage space for toiletries. This is a great mirror for making a spare bathroom look fresh and nice, since the beveled edge gives it a framed appearance.

If you prefer an oval shape, but still want a frameless mirror with an elegant look, Levy recommends the Anaelle as a great alternative to the rectangular Lithonia mirror. This one also hangs flush against the wall without any visible hardware for an elegant look, though some reviewers complained that the hanging clips made it more difficult to install. You can hang this oval-shaped mirror vertically or horizontally.

This frameless aluminum medicine cabinet is a versatile choice for a functional bathroom mirror that includes storage. Its elegant and simple design is not overbearing, Levy says, and would go well with any space. Plus, it comes with two adjustable shelves to accommodate your storage needs.

If you want a cabinet with three doors rather than one, Levy recommends the Laurent. It comes with two adjustable shelves that span the length of the cabinet, and you can reorient which way the doors open. It's a particularly affordable option for the amount of storage you get thanks to the deep, five-inch shelves.

Levy says a recessed medicine cabinet is her favorite option for a frameless mirror that still adds a little bit of character and design. The Astor mirror from Pottery Barn features multiple bevels for an elegant touch, and once installed the door opens from a left-side hinge. Plus, the mirror has adjustable tempered glass shelves and is sealed with protective lacquer for moisture resistance.

Consider a small vanity mirror if you aren't able to hang your mirror or if you just want an extra tabletop magnifying mirror for your vanity. Its three panels come with four mirrors, including 1x magnification in the center and a double mirror with 2x and 3x magnification on the left. The main mirror also features LED dimmable lights that mimic natural sunlight.
