Woman transforms bathroom with budget shower curtain hack that opens up space

Sep 14, 2023Sep 14, 2023

You don't need to be stuck with ugly shower curtains while redecorating your bathroom, instead make the room look bigger with an easy double curtain hack - for minimal cost

Bathrooms can be hard to decorate, balancing function and style that needs to be relatively timeless but still suit your taste - all in a small space.

Often, especially with so many of us living in flats and smaller houses, the bathroom space can feel tiny and slightly claustrophobic but one simple trick could transform the feel of the whole room.

TikToker Shanice Williams went viral with her double shower curtain hack, which now has over 15 million views and thousands of people calling the end result "beautiful".

Now other DIY fans are trying out the cheap but effective change and bathroom interior expert Warren Kinloch thinks it could be a winner for anyone with a small shower room.

The hashtag "double shower curtain" has now got over 500k views on TikTok with countless videos appearing of people trying out the trick.

Warren, from Bathroom Deal, explains the variety of reasons the trick works for any bathroom needing a shower curtain.

He said: "I love the idea of lifting a shower curtain pole towards the ceiling to create the illusion of more space in a bathroom. This is an excellent budget-friendly solution to make a small bathroom appear larger and more spa-like.

"Incorporating floor to ceiling shower-curtains on each side of the pole, will elevate the whole room by creating a wall of fabric that draws the eye upwards."

When trying this out for yourself, you need to both lift the pole towards the ceiling and install floor length curtains. Having two curtains rather than one balances the shower as only one ruins the effect.

While Shanice protects the curtains with a standard size matching shower curtain behind but another user Katie Lewis shared her neat trick.

Katie, @k8newyork on TikTok, used a double curtain rail with a see-through plastic shower curtain hidden behind which can be moved when using the shower.

The trick works thanks to an optical illusion, giving height to your room and making it feel bigger. Although take care when hanging your curtains as if something is out of place, or doesn't sit quite flush, then the optical illusion could be disrupted.

Warren said: "The key to making this design element work is to ensure that the shower-curtains are hung at the same height and look to be flush against the wall to create a seamless appearance."

This doesn't just work in bathrooms either, framing your windows in the same way could make a bedroom or living room appear much larger too, even if it's actually tiny.

"For a really modern look, I would recommend using a neutral-toned shower-curtain," added Warren, "Shades of white, beige, or grey are always a classic choice and can help create a calming and serene atmosphere in the bathroom.

"If you're feeling daring, you can always choose a curtain with a subtle pattern or texture too."
